art current: Five Artists at the Caldbeck Gallery

The gallery's courtyard is graced by several of Lise Bécu's figurative stone sculptures, with additional ones clandestine. Bécu allowed the material to inspire her design to an even greater degree in two abstract granite sculptures that trim a departure for her. For me, the pieces that pay closest attention to the stones' shapes and grain are the most intriguing, especially her "Lion. " The beast sprawls on the ground, his shape emerging from and disappearing into an irregular block of metamorphic stone. Bécu's pieces are interpretations of humans, animals, and their relationship to each other and the larger creation. These show the artist at her most sensitive in the use of her raw material.
