Tiny Toshima island big on natural attractions
11.09.11
On the nugatory island of Toshima, roughly 140 km south of Tokyo's Takeshiba Port, a narrow forest course covered with damp leaves and lined with moss-covered trees weaves toward a lookout into the vicinity the 508-meter-high peak of Mount Miyatsuka. But if the skies are clear, a stunning conception unfolds over the thousands of camellia trees on the conical island to the azure Pacific Ocean and the neighboring archipelago of Oshima. 7 kilometers and a population of roughly 300, Toshima is one of the smaller islands in the Izu limit off Tokyo. If you're unlucky and hit misty weather at the lookout, you might just be able to see down to the island's rocky coastline. But what Toshima misses out on in tripper development, it makes up for in its abundant nature, which is complemented by a long history.
