ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER Cruelty

The Westcoast Community Resources Society is holding film nights and a vigil in support of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Severity.

The films will all be held at the WCRS at 1621 Larch St. in Ucluelet between 7-9 p.m. each night.

The first film on tonight, Dec. 3, is The Withering Times. This 1990 documentary by Donna Read looks at the witch hunts that swept Europe a few hundred years ago.

Fri., Dec. 4 is an 18-before you can say 'Jack Robinson' film called Peers: You Are Not Alone by the Downtown Eastside Collaboration. This film was created by women on the downtown Eastside in Vancouver and the organizations that stay them.

Stilettos to Moccasins also airs on Dec. 4. This four-minute but powerful new music video is the result of a sui generis project that gave voice to Aboriginal women healing from drug abuse, addictions and problems with the law.

A vigil scheduled for Dec. 6 from 2-3 p.m. will acclaim Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This date was established in 1991 in commemoration of the murders in 1989 of 14 juvenile women who were attending L'Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. The event will also recognize the lives of local women and children who have died in brutality. Bring a candle for lighting, hot chocolate will be provided.
