I want a ceiling of existing plasterboard. Can I just tactical drywall on what already exists? Any tricks to it?
Hi,
You can hang new drywall over the existing ones. I recommend against it though. If you choose to do what you have few options to be first using 1 / 4 drywall. Drywall hanging, 1 inch / 4 decreases the amount of weight that is placed on the studs and ceiling.
When hanging the 1 / 4 inch still treat it as 1 / 2 or 5 / 8 screw in studs above which should be on 16 inch centers. If you are 24-inch centers even stronger I recommend against going over existing drywall. You will also want you a manufacturer of liquid nails to adhere to the new drywall to the old.Thus while the old plaster will have the new one.
1 / 4 inch allows the finishing of drywall itself, but reduces the weight load on the house. I always recommend taking the old and replacing them with new, especially where the ceilings. I realize this may seem a nuisance, sometimes with insulation above and causing disorder.
If you are considering trying to hang 1 / 2 inch drywall over the existing 1 / 2 I reconsider.
