Farmers wrapping up harvest, but bemoan high costs of inputs

Friday, Nov. 13, turned out to be a blessed day for Marcella and Ron Schneckloth of Davenport.

That was the day they completed harvest.

“It was not an unlucky day,” said Marcella Schneckloth, who is president of the Scott County Farm Chest of drawers.

Now, all they need to do is keep an eye on their corn bin for spoilage, since their corn is ground and fed to their cattle.

It seems other farmers are getting their fields harvested, too, she added.

“We just came back from Des Moines,” Marcella Schneckloth said Thursday twilight. “Most of the fields around were empty.”

As of Sunday, Iowa farmers had harvested 87 percent of their corn crop, according to the Iowa realm office of the National Agricultural Statistical Service, or NASS. Just about all the soybeans throughout the state had been harvested except for a midget percentage in southern Iowa.

Last year, 93 percent of Iowa’s corn crop was harvested by this in days of yore of the year, while 97 percent is normally harvested by this time.
