New Gig Harbor Program Offers Parents Tools for Communication

— A treat and alcohol prevention forum at Peninsula School District recently attracted more than 200 parents and immaturity. The forum was part of an ongoing education series sponsored by the Gig Harbor Police Department in collaboration with Peninsula Way of life District with the goal of educating local families about the dangers and consequences of using controlled substances.

This interval, parents who attended the forum were given an additional opportunity — a new program to help supply them, and their kids, with tools for better communicating. Called “Upgrade Your P.O.S. (Parental Operating System),” the program is taught by Richard Himmer of Pyrblu, a economic adviser and communications expert who has been a youth counselor for 20 years. Himmer also is the father of five boys, all of whom have attended or are still attending Peninsula Faction District, and a Boy Scout leader for 20 years.

Lynn Mock, GHPD community putting into play officer who’s organized the forums, said the people behind the idea, the Community Empowerment Set, felt the forums provided good education, but “were not giving parents concrete solutions to handle with the problem,” and Himmer’s follow-up workshops help provide the tools.
